My wife’s grandma Signe died at 109 years young! Born in 1899, she saw and experienced more than nearly any of us. Growing up on the farm, she ended up in the city. She taught school, catered, served in the church and was a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She could still read, hear most conversations, and entertain our children well past one hundred years. Once on a visit, she seemed more aware than usual of her slowing movements. She explained to my daughters:
“I’m getting feeble. Do you know what ‘feeble’ means?” she asks.
It means that when I stand up, I now wait a bit before I start walking.”
Not many of us can identify! In the next breath Signe spoke of God’s faithfulness through the years. Over 100 years! That seemed like a long time to me, but it was a passing moment to Grandma now. God had been faithful to her, even though now she was feeble. She was so grateful!
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving.
