Going through my files I found this Independence Day article copied from an unknown author.
On July 4, 1776, in the city of Philadelphia there was signed one of America’s greatest historic documents – The declaration of Independence! It marked the birth of this Nation which, under God, was destined for world leadership. However, we often forget that, in declaring independence from an earthly power, our forefathers made a forthright declaration of DEPENDANCE upon the Almighty God. The closing words of this historic document solemnly declare: “With a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other and our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”
“For the Lord your God has brought you into a good land…a land where you shall eat bread without scarceness…And when you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the Lord your God for this good land that He has given to you. But beware that you do not forget the Lord your God…lest when you have eaten and are full, and have built your houses and dwell in them…and your silver and gold are multiplied, and all you have is multiplied: then your heart becomes satisfied with these things, and you forget the Lord your God.” Deut. 8:7-14.
Therefore, as we think again of the birth of our great nation, let us pray that our beloved county might “have a new birth of freedom” – not freedom FROM GOD,…. But rather a freedom built upon God…”
