When Israel’s King Saul and Prince Jonathan fell dead in battle, the new king, David composed and sang a lament for the two. The closing lines of the song are:
“How the mighty have fallen!
The weapons of war have perished.”
(2 Samuel 1:27)
The song could be sung today, but not as a lament. How the mighty have fallen! We are living history and watching the mighty fall before our eyes.
- Saddam Hussein, President of Iraq for 24 years (1979-2003)
- Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt for 30 years (1981-2011)
- Muammar Gaddafi, President of Libya for 42 years (1969-2011)
- Bashar al-Assad, President of Syria wonders if he will be next.
Perhaps God is reminding us that no man is truly mighty. No man can stay mighty. No man can be god. Ask our current President Barak Obama about how fickle public opinion is. Swept into office with a mandate for change, now only a miraculous economic recovery will keep him from being swept out of office in 2012.
Last I checked, God is still on his throne.
