A Big Family
"In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God,
for whom and through whom everything exists,
should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering."
Hebrews 2:10
I was in Seminary and recently married when I bought my first life insurance policy. When the agent asked me how many children Pam and I intended to have I said, "About four, I suppose." I said this primarily because it was a slightly smaller family than both sets of our parents raised. His response to me back then was, "That's a large family." I might have returned his volley by saying, "Yes. We like the idea of a large family and if God blesses us with even more children, we will gladly receive them." We ended up with six, three sons and three daughters, although one son died at just two months old. Now I smile and say, "Back then, the idea of having a large family didn't scare us - but it should have!" Wow.
Regardless of our large or small nuclear families, when it comes to God's family, the Father wants "many"! Isn't that what all this is about? The creation of this colossal universe, the redemptive plan of the ages climaxing in the death and resurrection of God's Son, the great commission to go into the whole world and make disciples of all nations - it is all about "bringing many sons to glory." Let's do our part - in this ever growing family of God.
