A Doxology for Depression
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory,
and all the angels with him,
he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory."
Matthew 25:31
Depressed? Have a dose of "Doxepin". It is a "trilcyclic antidepressant" that doctors sometimes prescribe for depression. The word "Doxepin" sounds like it could be related to doxology even though the tie may be a stretch. Etymology suggests both might have a common root in Greek and Latin "doxa" which means "glory" or "praise", and is seen in our most common "praise song," the doxology. Even if not a lexical connection, please allow me to "play on a pun." If you are depressed emotionally, have a Doxepin; if depressed spiritually, try a doxology.
A doxology may be a better prescription for depression than you realize. I believe that it is easier to act your way into a new way of feeling than to feel your way into a new way of acting. Therefore, one of the shortest exits from the depths of depression is the path of praise. Start praising God for the good things in your life, instead of grousing over the things you wish were different. Start praising Jesus even if you don't feel like it. He is worthy of your praise. He will one day come in great glory and all will be set right. Praise Him now, by faith, and you may indeed begin to notice the dark cloud lift. You may still benefit from a Doxepin, but what you may need most, for your depression, is a doxology!
