Desperate Search
"Why were you searching for me?' He asked.
‘Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?'"
Luke 2:49
My wife was frantic. It was Sunday morning and she could not find one of our young children. The longer she had searched the more concerned she had become that the three year old was not in the house. She was soon convinced that our youngster could not possibly be in the house and must be outside. Frantically she ran out and around our house. Fearfully she ran toward the pond. She saw no evidence of the child and returned to the house. Near to the point of calling the police, she opened the front closet and there sat our child. She was patiently playing her game of "Hide and Seek". Mommy finally found her!
I can imagine that Mary and Joseph felt similarly distressed upon realizing that their young son was not with them and must be back in Jerusalem. Panic-stricken they search the streets and eventually find Him in the temple. "Why were you searching for me?" What a question for a kid to ask of his parents as such a time! "Because you're our son!" That is just the point. Jesus was already God in the flesh of a twelve year old boy. Perhaps He wanted Joseph and Mary to see this in His question and answer, "We sought you, desperately, because you are the Son of God." Seek Him.
