Genesis: Number One
“God made the wild animals according to their kinds,
and the livestock according to their kinds, and
all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds.
And God saw that it was good.”
Genesis 1:25
Imagine that you are livestock judge at the county fair. The cattle parade before you. To the casual observer they all look a lot alike. But upon close scrutiny, you spy the differences. Their owners have been washing, clipping and grooming these domesticated beasts in anticipation of your examination. The big question you must answer is, “Which is the best?” “Which is ‘Number One?’”
This question is often asked when we are presented with more than one kind of anything. Which is faster, stronger, longer-lasting, higher quality, etc.? Which is best? We do it with people too. Who is prettier, stronger, smarter, the most fun, the most spiritual, etc.? Who is best?
I’m glad God doesn’t approach us like judges at the county fair spying our flanks and hind quarters while asking, “Which is best?”God sees that “every kind” is good. That includes you and me and we do not have to stand in comparison to each other. That is good – for all of us.
