Genesis: Not Even One Day By Himself
"The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone;
I will make a helper suitable for him."
Genesis 2:18
I'm a loner. I've always thought it was just my personality. So why does God say that it's "not good that man should be alone"? Apparently, too much time alone is not healthy.
Too much time alone skews our perspective on life; encourages us to be self-centered; and prevents us from experiencing the joy of a seesaw. Too much time alone creates a false sense of self sufficiency; promotes paranoia and mistrust of others; and is a hindrance to the delight of riding a bicycle built for two.
The older I get the more I realize that I need people. I would gravitate toward strangeness and eccentric ways if I were too much alone. I would become odd, more so than I am. I think I would get depressed. Adam was no different. In fact, as one reads the first few chapters of Genesis, one might get the impression that Adam did not even last a day – by himself. And you might be right.
