Genesis: Uncharted Land Ahead

“I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go,
and I will bring you back to this land.
I will not leave you until I have done
what I have promised you.”

Genesis 28:15

It happened somewhere between Beersheba in the south, en route to Haran in the north. Jacob was leaving because his brother, Esau, was angry enough to kill him. These twin brothers had started in on each other while they were still inside of Rebecca’s womb. Esau was born first, but Jacob was so close behind that he was grasping Esau’s heel. He seemed to never let go. Finally, it was too much for the older sibling and that’s why Jacob was leaving. That’s when it happened.

Jacob was moving into a territory he knew little about. He was unnerved by the uncertainty he faced. That is when God showed Himself to Jacob in a way that Jacob had never seen Him before. The promise God gave him then brought assurance and security in an uncharted land.

You may have this assurance too, if you are following God. Whether you are facing a move, a job change, an illness, or other, it is similar to the uncharted land Jacob moved into. God’s promise to Jacob can be yours. God will go with you; He will watch over you.
