Humble Pie

"For the Lord takes pleasure in his people;
he adorns the humble with victory."

Psalm 149:4

It is what the servants ate. When a big hunt was over, the princes and lords ate deer steak while the servants and lesser huntsmen ate humble pie. The word "humble," in this connection, is believed to be derived through the Old French from the Latin, "lumbulus" (groin). The humbles, also known as the umbles and numbles, are the heart, liver, kidneys and other inferior eating parts of the animal. It's what the servants got when the princes feasted. Today it means to eat one's words, to apologize, and so to humble one's self in the eyes of another. No one today wishes for humble pie.

One might expect that when we get to heaven, the celestial menu would consist of numerous entrees all including humble pie. After all, pride does seem to be universal among us humans and no one could deny that we've each earned a slice of humble pie. Not so! The penitents, who have willingly humbled themselves, are not served the degrading fare. Instead, Jesus caters victory to them, victory upon a sterling platter. He exalts those who humble themselves. Do not be afraid of humbling yourself before Him. If you will repent of your sin and your egotistic ways, He will not make you grovel or eat humble pie. No. He will sit you down in the Great Hall for a feast fit for the prince, or princess, He has made you to be!
