The Buried Word

"I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you."
Psalm 119:11

It takes faith for the farmer to bury the seed in the soil. His seed grain, stacked in a corner of the barn, is visible and comforting in that it could be used to feed his herd in a pinch. But instead of leaving the grain stored where he can see it, the wise farmer buries it in the soil where he cannot see it. He does this with the belief that he will be better off getting the grain out of sight. He is.

The seed speaks to us of the Word of God. It does little good sitting in a corner of your room. Yes, it may give you comfort knowing that if you really need it, you know where to find it; however, this would be a false comfort. This seed will do you more good "out of sight," buried in the soil of your heart. There it will germinate by the power of the Holy Spirit and sprout righteousness. That is what the Psalmist means when he says that he has hidden the Word, "that I might not sin against you."

When was the last time you buried some Scripture in your soul? Have you read it this week? Have you studied what it meant? Have you memorized a favorite passage? Bury it! It will not stay down.
