The Bread Man

Has the bread-man come? One of our parishioners used to stop by a bread store before coming to church and picked up day old bread for the staff. Most Sundays he delivered and we all looked forward to the delicious and tasty treat.  I called him the bread-man and see in him a type of Christ.

Bethlehem was the “bakery” of Judea. The name means “house of bread” and had reference to the productive grain fields outside the town. These included the fields of Boaz, where over 1000 years earlier, Ruth had attracted the attention of the rich farmer as she gleaned in his fields. From their marriage came a son who one day became the grandfather of King David. From him, eventually, the Messiah would be born – also in Bethlehem. Jesus, years later, would announce to the people, “I am the Bread of Life.” How fitting is it that Jesus was born in the House of Bread?! This “Bread-Man” gives life-sustaining bread to all who ask.  He has “bread” for you!

 “But you, Bethlehem Ephratha,

though you are small among the clans of Judah,

out of you will come for me

one who will be ruler over Israel,

whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

Micah 5:2

He’s the Bread Man!
