Watching Out

watching out

Gene Hill for many years wrote articles for the back page of “Field and Stream” magazine. Allow me to share excerpts from what I believe is one of his best.

“Watching out is still a popular pastime in most of America; I believe it’s deep in the masculine genes. What does a small boy do when he climbs a tall tree? He watches out! A grown man leaning against his tractor, seemingly doing nothing, is actually obeying the deep urge to watch out…..The urge to watch out is so strong that men prepare for it almost subconsciously. I can think of no other reason for those little ladders on the backs of vans and RV’s….Fly-fishing is another sporting pastime in which a man can simply watch out…. Deer hunting, by far our most popular shooting sport is, as you have guessed, almost pure watching out….I have no doubt that many great things were invented by men who were watching out…. Watching out is not a results-oriented thing, but it does allow the mind total freedom.”

Gene Hill may or may not have been a believer. But he does, I believe, have an insight into the way God created males. Men I would encourage you to develop your inner prompting, to watch out:

  1. Watch out for God in creation. Psalm 19:1&2
  2. Watch out or listen for the Voice of God. Psalm 46:10, I Samuel 3:10b
  3. Watch your life and doctrine closely.  I Timothy  4:16
  4. Watch out for ways to serve your wife, children and others. Ephesians 5:25,

I Timothy 3:5.

  1. Watch out for God Sightings all around you. Such as: “divine appointments”, coincidences, protection, provision, answers to prayer, God’s love expressed through his people.
  2. Watch out for ways to pray for others.
  3. Watch out……

It’s time to go; I just saw something interesting out my window.
